Orford Ness, Suffolk UK. An extraordinary National Trust site on the biggest shingle spit in Europe and the site of a former UK Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. Imagine a biting East wind, all the way from Russia, over a green grey sea and onto an open spread of shingle. Dotted with empty and incomprehensible buildings and are like Ziggurats. When I was a child the war that gave me nightmares was being rehearsed in places like this. I remember them building a nuke proof bunker in open ground at the back of our flat in East London. The Quatermass Experiment really frightened me when I saw about three minutes of it on somebody’s TV.
