"This is what it was like for me" is exactly that. Drawing is a time coded record of being somewhere and looking somewhere else. That's why I sometimes prefer the erasures and preliminary marks to the final work. One of my favourite italian words "pentimenti".

> I’m not here for long

Well, every image represents a short span of time, doesn't it? Maybe not an instant like a photograph, but at least a moment in history. All you can really ask of the picture is that it says "I was here" and maybe "this is what it was like for me".

Thanks Steve - yes, it's really liberating place to work but I'm aware of how big through space and time this landscape is and how I'm not here for long. But as W C Fields said "The world is getting to be such a dangerous place, a man is lucky to get out of it alive". So I'll just get on with my job, then.

> It has an even thinner weaving of names, descriptions, pictures and history.

That's great. It means you get to describe and document it without having to deal with the baggage of others' responses before you. It's not often you get to be a real explorer.
